I also had this problem, and found a nice solution. I'm not quite sure who the article is written by - but I think it's somebody on the list. Ingo also contributed to it I think. This is completetly cross browser compatible, and very elegantly done too!

Check out the test pages one level up on the same site. Brilliant stuff - really useful for me as a beginner to go through and see how it's been done. He/she has a complete section on image/text centering, so if the above link doesn't work for you, one of the articles will.
