So i was able to fix both issues...
the nav on the left had a {margin: 10px;} and i never specified the
other values, it was using the browser defaults.
the other prob was a <div> issue.. i needed to contain the 2 items in
the center collumn within their own div.

removed all padding and margins, and have checked and double checked
that they are in the correct order...
I bet there is something that i am over looking.
I am fairly new to CSS, but i am moving along everyday.. I am trying
to keep things clean and organized - but no guarantees that it will be
perfect.
