The reason the image backgrounds don't show is because you've applied them to a <a> element, which is an inline element. Although you've given it a width and height, these properties don't apply to inline elements, so FF ignores them and makes the <a> element 0px by 0px. You can check this using the DOM Inspector, which I highly recommend learning how to use as part of your web debugging process.

Changing the <a> to "display: block" makes the image show up. But you don't want to do this because then it will drop onto a new line. Instead, why not just place the image in the source itself via the <img> element? Since it appears to be content, not decoration, this seems to be the correct way to go, and is better for non-CSS enabled browsers.

A couple notes about list posting protocol:
- To start a new thread, do not reply to an existing message. When you do this, your message gets threaded on to the old thread, which messes up the archives and makes it less likely that others will see your message and subsequently reply to you. You must send a new message with an appropriate and descriptive
subject line to [email protected] in order to start a new thread.
- Make sure your subject line is as descriptive as possible. Many people decide which threads to read and help with based on the subject line. It also helps people searching the archives at a later date.

Thanks,
Zoe
