Ok, my (x)html is now valid.

I've also added the IE conditional to get rid of the flash in everything
but IE (my head is hurting from all the z-index experimentation!).

But the original question still stands, is it worth attempting to
rectify the rendering issues with the pop up windows in opera 7.54 or is
the implementation of the :hover selector in this version too buggy to
bother?

Tekin,

First you should get rid of all the errors in your HTML:

http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A//www.ranshop.co.uk/p
roduct_list.php%3Fcat_id%3D31%26man_id%3D29

The doctype has to be in the very first line of the document. If you
want to put IE in quirksmode, there may be a XML Declaration above it.

You should experiment with z-index and float properties?!

Just use object to embed the flash and some conditional comments to make
it work in all browsers:

                <!--[if IE]>
                  <object
classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000">
                        <param name="movie" value="/flash/homepage.swf"
/>
                        <param name="quality" value="high" />
                        <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
                        <img src="/img/flash/homepage.jpg" alt="" />
                  </object>
                <![endif]--><!--[if !IE]><x-->
                  <object data="/flash/homepage.swf"
type="application/x-shockwave-flash">
                        <param name="movie" value="/flash/homepage.swf"
/>
                        <param name="quality" value="high" />
                        <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
                        <img src="/img/flash/homepage.jpg" alt="" />
                  </object>
                <!--><![endif]-->

This will reduce the display errors.

regards,

  Martin
