I think you are attempting something admirable-- perhaps going about in a different way might help. This site <http://chiseko.hosted.doosh.net/> from May1st Reboot-CSS may give you some ideas? It has been said 'typography exist to honor content.' That's nearly impossible to do when you try to force feed and control a medium that is fluid.. Open it up, and let it go...put the text adjacent to the image, rather than on top of it. Try relative font-sizing, and traditional methods of marking it up.
