For logos, I'd much (much) rather have a pure vector application such
as Adobe's Illustrator, which is very expensive. I've never tried
the GIMP programs, but they may do the trick?

I know that a lot of professionals use programs like
Photoshop ...but I just can't affort the price-tag on
such a beast.

Gotta put in a plug here for my favorite vector application, Corel Draw. Version 12 of the full suite is available at eBay for $72.45 (http://search.ebay.com/corel-draw_W0QQfromZR18QQfsopZ1QQsspagenameZADMEQ3aBQ3aTB2Q3aUSQ3a2 or http://tinyurl.com/c99cg ). That's a Buy It Now! price, no bidding required. You get the whole enchilada, including the vector package, Corel Draw, and the bitmap editor, Corel PhotoPaint, R.A.V.E 3D, as well as other applications. I've got both Illustrator and Corel Draw, and CD beats Illustrator in every respect, especially user interface transparency and ease of use.

Cheers,
Scott
