You desire a layout that can handle arbitrary contents, but if you put a 2000px wide table in a table layout, how usable is the resulting page going to be? You have to bear some responsibility of what contents will be on the page. The major failing is IE. CSS2 (and supporting browsers) can use table display properties to build your stretchy table-like layout, it just can't do source reordering as well as floats can...yet.
