Sam - I think there's a problem with floated & non-floated divs. If I take
your CSS and float all elements in the left-hand column, it displays
correctly (without adding the nonsense text). 

Hopefully somebody else on this list can explain why, but my experience is
to be careful with unfloated and floated elements - once I start floating,
following elements get floated as well or all sorts of weird layout issues
start happening.
