What make you think these layouts do not work? The whitespace between the containers? If it is the case, I think Bill and you are missing the point. I'm talking about *layout* here, not design. That whitespace is not an issue at all. As I say in the article, I didn't try to make things pretty, just tried to show how to use CSS to create different *layouts* (without wrappers, hacks, etc.). A white gap between containers does not mean a layout fails, it just means that a "faux-columns" technique needs to be implemented.
