Containers are mostly <div> elements used to position content of some kind.

Yup, you could actually say that layers are containers that has got an 
absolute positioning (if your idea of layers is the same as mine - I 
hope so :-))

Ehmmm - text cannot (validly) be in a HTML document without a container, 
images is a block element, and can.

You can easily have several containers inside each others (then they're 
'nested') but do only do so if there's a purpose for it :-)
