This is where the specs come in.  Believe it or not, they're not as hard 
to read as many make them out to be, and the more you familiarize 
yourself with them the stronger you will become at CSS.  When I searched 
for "block formatting context" at www.w3.org, the first result was this 
page:

In the table on contents listed here, there was an item listed "9.4.1 
Block formatting contexts."  I clicked on this link and was taken to 
this bit of information:
"Floats, absolutely positioned elements, inline-blocks, table-cells, and 
elements with 'overflow' other than 'visible' establish new block 
formatting contexts."

Not hard to find and not hard to understand. :-)  The specs can be hard, 
but they are always worth a look when a question like this arises -- 
chances are, they've already answered your question and can give you the 
info you need far faster than waiting for responses from a list.  If you 
don't understand the information they yield, then bring it to the list.
