This has recently been discussed on this list <http://archivist.incutio.com/viewlist/css-discuss/68253> and previous message linked from there. Hiding the focus ring is a problem for accessibility reasons: it gives keyboard users some feedback. You can hide, but make sure provide alternate feedback for those users.
