Hi Erica,
I'm afraid you aren't 100% in the right topic, but I have the following 
suggestions for speeding up the page.

- The header-image is rather big. You can sharpen this image in a paint 
program, and then save it as jpg again, but now with about 25 to 30% 
compression. That gives a lossless smaller amount of kB's (40 instead of 
49 kB), as you can see in this test-image

- You can combine the html- and css-validation images in 1 image, that 
is one http-request less (traffic between visitor and server).

- You can also combine the images left.gif and right.gif, and show the 
good part at a certain position by background-positioning.

- And if you want to see a working tab-hovering, I made some time ago a 
testpage
