It's not any harder to maintain.  You just remove the floating in the 
print style sheet so the divs stack vertically -- their default behavior.

Ok, then just remove the floats on the columns so that they stack.  This 
will be much less problematic that trying to maintain the two column 
layout in the printout -- nothing but headaches down that road.  It will 
also benefit the user because on very long pages, where the sidebar runs 
out quickly, there would otherwise be a large empty gap down the side of 
the page that could be better used to hold text, leading to less pages 
printed.  Much better use of space on the printed page.

Just make the ads "display: none," please.  I can guarantee that no one 
wants to print your ads. :-)  And if for some nuerotic reason they do, 
they can take a screen shot and print that. ;-)
