Use a span with
a span { display:block; position:absolute; etc... }
The display:block allows you to position it, resize it, etc. If you
have a tutorial that says to use divs, it's wrong, it should say
spans.
I think http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/popups/demo.html is a
good example of what you are probably trying to do.
