Hi Stephanie,
I don't have the answer: (for me) it seems rather complicated to line up 
a form and a list item together.
As an alternative to avoid the problem: perhaps you can broaden the 
search strip to 100% (then he will push down the rest at enlarging), and 
start the "home" button just under it? - A left side blue 
background-image in the searchbar can allmost maintain the desired 
design (no "empty button").
