I think you've mentioned that text resizing is not something that concerns you (it should), but perhaps you'll be interested in knowing that at my 'default' browser window size (not full-screen on 1024x768) my browser has a unique way of solving your problem, It just doesn't display the top portion of your page. I cannot scroll to it, it's displayed above the browser chrome by the absolute positioning you've used. My suggestion.... rethink what you are doing with layout and font sizing first, and worry about IE's display of the gray box later on.
