Darrel, I've had much success in avoiding this problem w/ a judicious use of overflow:hidden and/or using relative positioning instead of floats. An example is here: http://sandbox.royalrodent.com/threecol/.
NOTES AND DISCLAIMERS: there are several different alternate stylesheets included on that page using different approaches to what I call "obstenant" elements, i.e., those that refuse to float nicely in a three column environment. If you are using Firefox or a browswer that allows you to switch to alternate style sheets, you can see the others in action. The current example CSS on the page holds together in IE 6 windows down to 640x480. Below that, rendering bugs make the third column do a little wrap dance depending on the size of the window. Also, I've never tested on a Mac, so I'm curious for feedback. Finally, these may not be perfect, as this is just something I have toyed w/ from time to time. But I believe their close to being ready for prime time w/ some proper tweaking and TLC. Don't give up the fight too soon. -- Bryce Fields www.royalrodent.com "Do or do not!
