Could be more than that. Different fonts have different variations in
stroke weights according to size. Take a look at
http://www.ambiguism.com/CSSD/safari-test.html using various sizes.

Maybe the installed font sets aren't the same on everything you've been
looking at. Your two screenshots are definitely different, as the Mac is
using Lucida Grande, while doze is using Arial. Here are some looks I
took on OS/2 & Linux:
