I attempted laying it out differently, and putting the emphasis on the 
painter and her work. It has been /quick tested/ on my end in xp ie/6.0, 
ie/5.5, opera9.0b2, ff1.5.0.4, moz//1.17.12 and debian linux on xp.

It seems to hold in linux, mac/ie5.2, safari, and win2000 if you can

I hope this may give you some ideas for at least an approach to the 
resolution of the issues.

PS I did not trim your 880px wide header image; consequently, you'll 
draw a healthy h-scroll bar at 800 in any browser.
