I think you're fine with the PNGs for the corners.

Yes, this would be a good option.

This filter works well, as long as you don't need to position or tile 
the background images. You are probably positioning the corners, so it 
may not work for you here. I like it in general as an option though.

IE cuts off content that is negatively margined out of its parent. 
Setting position: relative on it should make it show up.
