The fix was an unlikely one (at least in my opinion). It involved adding the
line left: 50% to the position: absolute statement. (Earlier attempts to
change to float: right did put the div back onto the right side of the page
in Ff. But in IE it was sent to the bottom and I couldn't find the right
combination of margin manipulations to bring it back up!) 

 

But hey, both browsers are now happy and that makes me happy ;)
