I tried that and it didn't help...still looked the same. I simply put a 
{background: transparent;} on the bg that are now "white" but I didn't see a 
change. Did I miss something in the declaration?

Just make the corners transparent. :-) Since you aren't using anti-aliasing, it 
won't be a problem.
