That's a great idea; zooming in really helps.

A free tool for Windows that I use all the time for this is Zoom+:

This lets me zoom in and measure things without having to take a screenshot.

I also use Zoom+ with its automatic update turned on (and set to high speed)
and "always on top", so I can experiment with my CSS, test rollover effects
and the like, and see a magnified version of my page in real time.
