According to the specs, it should work. :-)

According to the manufacturers, it doesn't. :-(

I couldn't say why for certain, but I'd imagine that because so much
page design was done with table cells as the primary containers for so
many browser versions, there's tons of legacy code that relies on
table cells being inviolate. It might take a while to rewrite the
browsers to support this.
