.classname p:first-letter reads as the the first-letter of a <p> that  
is a child of an element with .classname.
Make it p.classname:first-letter

Concerning your IE problem, see also this page for some of the more  
interesting problems with ::first-letter in iExploder (v7 is a bit  
better, but still has some nice problems).
