It looks good, and by reading the code I can just about work out what's 
going on. 

Unfortunately, PHP is beyond me, and without PHP it is just too tricky 
to position everything correctly.

I think that semantically your approach is better. I'm using a list, 
which somehow doesn't seem appropriate for a gallery of images. There 
again, if a list is deemed appropriate for a navigation bar, then I 
guess it might also be suitable for an image gallery.
