I guess I am missing something? Twenty-eight of the 40 layouts on this 
page <http://blog.html.it/layoutgala/> are three column layouts with the 
content fist in the source order. They work well cross-browser. No hacks 
required for ie (providing you play your cards right and avoid the box 
model hacks by keeping horizontal padding and vertical borders off width 
bearing containers when you add /your/ content).
