Thanks; I was reasonably sure someone had come across something like
this before; I just couldn't find anything useful when I searched
for my specific problem.

On the whole, I think the solution I "discovered" (as shown in
http://www.zap.org.au/~john/web/test-css/test-working.html) seems
less problematic: it works in all browsers and looks "cleaner" as a
solution.
