Working with non-uniform size images is difficult, and there may be a 
better way of doing it than than this:

Quick tested in ie.6 and 7, opera/9.02, and ff2.0.
What complicates it just a little is that some of your thumbs have a 
sliver white border on one or more side. Since some users will scale the 
fonts, setting a height on the container may not be a good idea; and the 
book background image will work only if you do it in a way that will 
enable it expand vertically with the text on font zoom.
