Wow. Lots of good information there, Franky. Thank you for all your good 
research.
The only use I have made of the clipping rectangle is to provide text animation
using JavaScript[1]. Not a subject for this discussion group, but a CSS property
nonetheless.

When dealing with CSS layout, I think I will stick to one of the alternatives 
that 
Franky proposes, rather than attempting to use the "clip" property. A good 
question and a helpful answer. Thank you both.
