I have used the method you describe for several years, and haven't
encountered any problems.

I know of only one possible disadvantage with it: IE/win (all versions)
will not get the CSS file if you add 'media' to
the @import, so the following...
@import url(basestyles.css) screen;
...will give pretty unexpected results.
Of course, that IE-bug can be turned into an advantage, as described here...

I use @import so that basic stylesheets for a 2-column, a 3-column and
other possible base-layouts, all imports the same stylesheets for what's
common for these layouts. I then use @media wrappers in each stylesheet
for media-specific styling.
