Learning how to manipulate floats with negative margins, will provide
you with a powerful "tool set". I'll definitely recommend it.
OTOH: there is no single method that will solve all layout problems and
work in all situations. To aim for one will just put limitations on what
can be done.
I normally need, and use, a number of methods in order to solve all
problems for a layout. I may have a preference for what to start out
with, and that's often a float-construction with (some) negative
margins. However, since all layouts depends on making the numbers add up
- also under stress, I can't rule any methods out until I got those
numbers right.
I think that's how most designers with some experience will look at it.
