Ain't it a drag? I ran into the same problem recently. However, I eventually came round to thinking that it would impinge on semantics to remove this crucial aspect of link denotation from what is, at the end of the day, part of the link. I can only advise that you come to the same point of view (unless someone finds a magic way of separating the :after from its parent)!
