Even if the links are absolutely positioned, the 'white space content' takes up space, and might cover the clickable areas. For a negative test without the fix, ul {background-color: red; zoom:1;} does color the area that is covered by the ul, which gets its height by the li. The li are not getting their height by the links, because these are absolutely positioned. And the red area is sensible to the font-size chosen in the IE menu.
