That was actually deliberate, although I'm quite willing to accept that 
it might be misguided! My intention was for the all the <li> elements to 
be displayed inline, but each contains a floated <a> which is taken out 
of the normal flow with 'display: block; float: left'.

I would try floating the <li>s instead, but I think (although haven't 
checked) that some browsers don't support :hover on anything other than 
<a> elements. Will check later on.

The technique I'm using seems to work fine in IE6, IE7 and FF 1.5 & 2. 
Is that more by luck than judgement? Even if floating the <li>s would be 
a better way of doing it, I still can't quite see why Opera is behaving 
the way it is.

Any further pointers appreciated.
