It probably wouldn't be noticeable on your typical uncalibrated LCD display but I can see it on a CRT and a calibrated LCD screen. It could be the colour space in your image editor and the way it exports. (is it something weird like 16-bit)? As a workaround, consider using transparency in the image with a carefully selected boundary. But I don't think its a css problem. - other than it would look better if your text block had a transparent (the default) background colour).
