My fault: I wasn't paying attention and used a white background rather
than a transparent one in the background declarations. I've removed it
and it works now on a variety of browsers, including Lynx. (I tested it
in Delorie Lynx viewer and a variety of browsers through Browsercam.)
I did make one other change: The image swap is accomplished by shifting
the position of a single background image rather than using two separate
images. Two images will produce a brief "flash" in Firefox as they swap,
whereas the transition with a single image background is seamless and
it's neater anyway.
This method doesn't attempt to accommodate IE5.2/Mac, but in return it
allows you to eliminate a non-semantic element from the linked headers.
