Well, if a specific character cannot be displayed in the specified  
font(-family), browsers will look for an alternative that does  
contain the character.
In the case of  Fx 2.0.0.x Mac (and older) the fact that it cannot  
display the heart characters is a bug [1] and is fixed in the nightly  
builds (what will be Firefox 3.0).
