Rich,

You can set margins on the elements inside the columns instead of 
setting any padding on the column divs themselves. You can also nest a 
div inside each column div that has no width set on it and just give 
each of these divs padding or margin.

By the way, your left column is dropped down in FF 2 no matter what size 
I set my window to.
