I can see what is happening, but don't know am easy way to resolve it 
with your current coding approach. I'll bet that Georg does.

The content of the popup (using a span, which is a non-structural inline 
element) is being constrained to the size of the parent container, the 
li.  You can see this if you remove position:relative from the li.

Perhaps using a block element, such as div, instead of span will give 
better results.
