Close David, thanks. I found more of what I was looking for here: http://www.brunildo.org/test/shrink-to-fit.html and was able to get it working using the table/table-cell/inline-block combo. I tested it on browsershots and it seems to be ok in all except Opera 9 which pushes one to the next line.
