You can make it work by throwing IE6 out of its "not very standard mode", and then throw in a "shrink to vertical content-size" rule it can chew on. The result will look like this... <http://www.gunlaug.no/tos/alien/mw/test_08_0303.html> ...which I think is pretty close to what you intended.
