They go to reinforce an almost ancient web philosophy - do not get too hung up on trying to replicate a "print" design philosophy. There are too many variables that cannot be controlled, right down to the contrast or colour adjustment of a users screen or the vagaries of different browser rendering engines. If you can accept that things will look different, and be prepared to accept some variation, you will loose a lot less sleep.
