OK, I've finally got somewhere with an even more precise cause. The bug can be recreated with <http://gsnedders.com/the-need-for-a-switch-in-ie8 > and <http://gsnedders.com/search-strings>. The issue is with the usage of dl/dt/dd (though I'm not sure which is causing it). Totally removing all my rules for them makes no difference.
