As Jim pointed out: this is a job for Sprites!

Add in a little absolute positioning, and you can make it look and
behave just as you want.

Note: the .bmp image-format creates unnecessarily large files, and is
not the best format for the web.
The 8bit .png I'm using for all states, is about 1/5 the file-size of
one of your .bmp images.
