Hi Brant, Can you not use descendent selectors instead?
I have done a lot of government work where we have a common layout for all sites, but each site can have a distinct skin. What we did is create a heavily commented CSS file that demonstrates how to apply different styles to different areas of the page, so users only need to swap out style rules for their own. You can then use more sophisticated descendent selectors which will drastically improve the simplicity, weight and readability of your markup, but your clients will still understand how to effect their own changes.
