[css-d] links separated by a pipe ... pipe too tall

So I have a list links, separated by a pipe, a la alistapart.  My
issue, the pipes are so darned tall!  Odd from a design perspective.
Is there a way to set a height to 'border-left' ?

here's the CSS:

#footerlinks ul{
  margin-left: 0;
        padding-left: 0;
        display: inline;
}

#footer #footerlinks ul li {
    margin-left: 0;
    padding: 3px 20px;
    border-left: 1px solid #000;
    list-style: none;
    display: inline;
}

#footerlinks ul li.first{
    border-left: none;
}
