Posting to a discussion list is different from normal email correspondence. With regular business or personal correspondence, it makes sense in many cases to top post; that is to hit reply and just type your reply at the top to save yourself the trimming and to save your reader the scrolling. Discussion lists are different in that they are often published and replies in logical order makes it easier to read the digest (linear) version. Whether it's "better" or not is certainly debatable and subject to personal opinion. It's often a policy or suggested behavior because of the archival nature of a list. >> I find myself scrolling down through long columns of already >> familiar content, just to see whether the new posting has any >> significant content. It should be noted that the style I am using here is called "inline replying" but is a subset of bottom posting in that I am posting my responses /below/ your questions and not Jeopardy style (answer followed by question). Trimming the message you are replying to and leaving in only the pertinent parts is good practice whether you're top /or/ bottom posting, so the issue of scrolling is not directly connected to bottom posting. >> I think the reason is readability -- if someone starts reading the >> question thread in the middle, they should be able to read the >> whole thread, in order, from top to bottom. Unless you keep doing it without trimming down your quoted text (see above)." It's clear that bottom posting is recommended practice, even if top posting is not "punishable by death."
