Yes, but then you _always_ get the float below the title. We're  
talking about a template where the length of the title can be very  
different from page to page.

The examples with the black borders show the behaviour I'm after.

If you have any techniques you could point to, I'd be very grateful.  
I've been googling around for this, but I couldn't find anything useful.
